The Giver, published in 1993, is an award-winning story for teens and young adults that has sold more than five million copies. The Giver is a musical adaptation of a science fiction story about a seductively safe and comfortable utopian society where all pain, conflict and confusion is eliminated, and troubling emotions are suppressed.
Beloved children’s novelist and recipient of the Newbery Medal for Number the Stars and The Giver Lois Lowry inspired acclaimed composer Susan Kander to create an all new opera for youth that celebrates individualism. Lois Lowry has accepted our invitation to speak following each performance. The content of the opera is based upon the content of the book and is recommended for upper elementary, middle and high school audiences.

The Giver is commissioned for and first performed by Lyric Opera of Kansas City and Minnesota Opera. The Lyric Opera of Kansas City is partnering with Rockhurst High School to present The Giver.
